Featured Playlist: Rebecca Walker

Q: Who are you?

A: I am Rebecca Walker, the adviser for The Flor-Ala and the Diorama. I also teach Layout and Design (COM 410).

Q: Would you say your playlist has a theme?

A: It didn’t start out with one, no. It was originally a lot of the songs I listen to on repeat, but when I organized the playlist, it might look like I have one. I don’t feel like it’s the real representation of a relationship, but if you listen to the songs, it could seem that way. The playlist starts out very ethereal and soft. The songs are positive and hopeful, but then they start to become darker and sad, before ending on a more nostalgic note. I would say it’s a mix of ethereal happiness and realistic negative experiences.

Q: Do you have a favorite song on the playlist?

A: It depends on my mood. Right now, it’s probably “Home” by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. I feel like the song describes where I am right now. I’m actively seeking happiness; I can see where I am and where I want to be, so I’m working toward that. It’s also relevant to my relationship, too, which has been long distance for almost six of the eight and a half years we’ve been together.

Q: Looking back at the finished product that is your playlist, is there anything you wish you would have added or that you feel like you need to add?

A: After I initially completed it, I went back and added “You and I” by Ingrid Michaelson, but now, no. These (songs) have a nice thing together.

Q: If you were going to give the playlist a title, what would it be?

A: “Peace and Yearning”. If you listen to it, there’s a very ethereal feel to the first half, but the second half of the playlist has more sadness to it. You have to listen to the words, though. I’m a big lyrics person, and I pay attention to them more than the music, really.
